Sony Hack Confirms Marvel Wanted Spider-Man In Captain America 3

The Wall Street Journal has reported that, via leaked e-mails, there was an extensive discussion about your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man sharing the silver screen with The Star-Spangled Man With Plan by crossing over from Sony to Marvel Studios in Captain America: Civil War and that this proposal went as high as Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and Disney CEO Bob Iger. No doubt about it that Spidey played an integral part in comic book version of the story and his presence in the film adaptation would have been true to the source material.

Furthermore, the article states that in an e-mail dated 10/30/14 sent to Sony Pictures Co-Chairman Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures President Doug Belgrad even floated the possibility of Marvel producing a new Spider-Man trilogy, with Sony retaining “creative control, marketing and distribution.” However talks between Sony and Marvel ‘broke down’ for undisclosed reasons.

Apparently Sony will be holding a ‘Spidey Summit’ early next year to discuss the future of the franchise after the lackluster performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the box office. Other tidbits of Sony’s plans from earlier e-mails included a confirmation of a female led Spider-Man spin-off movie as well as an animated comedy produced by The LEGO Movie team of Chris Miller and Phil Lord. Also, that Ms. Pascal had talked to Sam Raimi, who directed the studio’s first three ‘Spider-Man’ movies, about returning to the franchise, possibly to direct again or as a producer.” However, that last bit of information has been removed from the article.
